SINGULAR NOUN RULES: |
Use ANOTHER + a noun for one more item in a group: another banana | Use THE OTHER + a singular noun for the LAST item in a group: the other pear |
Examples: | I ate one banana, then I ate another banana. Maybe later, I will eat another one. | First, I ate one pear, then I ate the other pear. Now there are no more pears. |

PLURAL PRONOUN RULES: |
Use OTHERS as a pronoun for more items in a group: others | Use THE OTHERS as a pronoun for the last items in a group: the others |
Examples: | I saw some birds flying, and I saw some others sitting in a tree. | There are five books on the desk. Three of the books are mine, but the others are John's books. |
