Possessives: Intermediate and Advanced

Usually, apostrophe S ('s) is not used with non-living things.
In this case, the of-construction is used (the key to my house)
or a compound noun is formed (my house key).

However, with some non-living things, an apostrophe S ('s) IS used:

COLLECTIVE OR GROUP NOUNS: the company's policy
the goverment's control
SOME ANIMALS: my cat's collar
the dog's fur
COUNTRIES: the United States' allies
Mexico's financial situation
INSTITUTIONS: the administration's decision
the phone company's problem
PLACES WITH SUPERLATIVES: San Francisco's longest street
the world's deepest hole
TIME EXPRESSIONS: in four weeks' time
two weeks' worth
FIXED EXPRESSIONS: for goodness' sake!
